According to Video Games Chronicle and Dexerto, GameStop now sells pre-owned PS5 Pro consoles for $1,399.99 in the US, $500 more than a new console, listed at $899.99. The increase has shown on the retailer's website since October 6, just weeks before GTA 6, set for November 19.
What the prices show
Dexerto reports that GameStop Pro members can bring that price down to $1,329.99, the same as refurbished units. An internal e-mail attributed to the retailer, posted by an anonymous Reddit user, announced the increase; VGC says the updated website listings confirmed it was real. The message states that a price above the new console's is "intentional".
The new console, listed at $899.99, did not appear to be purchasable on the retailer's site. Dexerto adds that third-party sellers on Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart list similar prices, but those are independent resellers rather than the retailers themselves.
A backdrop of tight supply
Launched at $699.99 in November 2024, the PS5 Pro rose to $749.99 last August, then to $899.99 in April, Dexerto recalls. It adds that Sony asked Japanese buyers to prove 60 hours of playtime to enter a purchase lottery.
VGC also cites a senior buyer at an unnamed retailer, who told The Game Business this summer that component shortages mean demand will likely outstrip supply at year end. Former GameStop employees, per Dexerto, see the move mostly as a margin play, since the chain buys used consoles for trade-in credit far below their value.
What we don't know yet
None of the sources consulted reports an official explanation from GameStop. It is also unclear whether prices will change before launch. Meanwhile, browse our gameplay guides and our interactive map of Leonida, and follow GTA 6 Universe on X for what comes next.
