How to escape the police?
Wanted states
As in previous entries in the series, committing a crime in view of a witness triggers a wanted level shown as stars. Based on early previews of the game, this system would go up to six stars, compared to a maximum of five in GTA V.
The higher the level, the more intense the police response: unmarked cars tailing you at the first level, roadblocks and helicopters from the mid levels onward, and heavily armed specialized units at the highest levels.
Break line of sight
The most reliable method is still to get out of law enforcement's detection cone: turn at several intersections, cut through alleys, or take cover under a bridge or in a tunnel.
A visual indicator (the glow around the radar) marks the zone where police are actively searching for you. Once you've stayed outside that zone long enough without being spotted again, your wanted level starts dropping.
Change your look and your vehicle
Switching vehicles after losing the police stops patrols from spotting you by the reported plate or model.
A paint shop respray or simply changing outfits can also help you stop matching the broadcast description — a mechanic already present in previous games in the series.
Getting back to zero stars
The wanted level gradually decreases as long as you stay out of sight. Hiding for a few minutes somewhere discreet (a dead end, an underground car park, private property) generally speeds up the process.
